Better Quality of Life Through
Individualized Treatment & Counselling Services
Individual treatment is often termed as psychotherapy, and is meant to assist individuals with emotional concerns, which can range in order of their intensity or severity. The main goal of this form of therapy is to change the quality of life by assisting an individual in coping with stressors in one’s life.
Whether it is difficulty coping with anxiety, depression, or learning challenges, a professional psychologist can help you improve your mental health through systematic and evidence-based treatment.

Anxiety is a wide-ranging condition that ranges from mild symptoms to crippling levels that make life seem extremely challenging or virtually impossible to function. The good news is that, if you’re experiencing anxiety, you’re not alone – it’s one of the most common conditions. Even better, anxiety is also highly treatable.
What we’ll do together is explore the kinds of symptoms and feelings you are experiencing, as well as address the potential source(s) of this anxiety. Then we’ll work on ways to overcome and mitigate the anxiety, helping you move forward on the journey to wellness.
Depression is another commonly seen condition, one that frankly has a variety of meanings to many different people. There is natural and somewhat fleeting depression as a reaction to a loss or major life change, for example. Some people, however, experience a more debilitating, long-term depression, one that can present many obstacles and make the day-to-day seem daunting.
We can work together to identify the symptoms of depression you are experiencing, and we’ll take a look at certain life events and personality traits in tandem. Then we’ll address a wide range of areas that are likely associated with your depression and holding you back – including sleep, diet, exercise and other life factors. This is a proven method of helping people overcome depression.
Learning challenges are not something to be ashamed of. 1 in 10 people have some form of a learning challenge, making it an extremely common phenomenon. Learning challenges can be overcome! There is no need to hide them, to be ‘too proud’ to seek help. On the contrary, the strongest people in life are those who seek help and find ways to overcome their challenges.
We will work together to assess the learning challenge(s) you are facing, finding specific activities and processes in which you may be struggling. Then we’ll take a constructive approach to identify and leverage ways in which you can overcome these challenges and not only survive but even thrive in learning situations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Isn’t it a sign of weakness to go to a therapist or psychologist?
Not at all! Quite the contrary, in fact. Seeking help is a sign that one recognizes the problem and is willing to take action to make it better. That’s a sign of strength! Counselling helps people assess the stressors and issues that they are facing, then addresses these issues and helps one take steps to overcome what’s holding them back. While society has placed a stigma on therapy, that stigma has been lessening over time. Nowadays there is much more recognition of mental health and emotional struggles as legitimate issues. Much as one would see a medical doctor for treatment of a physical ailment, individual counselling is the best option for people coping with mental and emotional health issues.

Can one suffer from both anxiety and depression, or are they mutually exclusive?
Anxiety and depression have a lot of overlap. It is not at all uncommon for someone with depression issues to also deal with anxiety. Indeed, they are often two sides of the same coin, coexisting and manifesting themselves simultaneously or alternating. Whereas depression is more of a shutdown reaction to negative feelings and emotions, anxiety is a constant worry about what kind of bad things might happen. Both are part of the stress response system and can most certainly exist side by side, appearing as a debilitating emotional condition. The good news is that anxiety and depression do not need to be treated separately. At Waystone we often treat people who are experiencing issues of both depression and anxiety.
I’ve been called ‘slow,’ and/or ‘lazy’ – how do I know whether I have a learning challenge? Aren’t a lot of these just an excuse?
Last part first: Learning challenges are hardly an excuse! Rather they are legitimate issues facing many in our society – somewhere in the range of 1 in 10 people, in fact. Sadly, there are still remnants of an old guard, old school mentality, people who claim that learning challenges are “bunk” and that all you need to do is “apply yourself.” Clearly these people haven’t seen someone struggling while trying their best, ‘applying’ themselves only to see little if any improvement. The natural reaction to and result of that is frustration, often times leading to the breaking point where the person struggling with the learning challenge just wants to give up. There is no reason to label anyone ‘slow,’ ‘lazy,’ or anything else – that’s just derogatory and unproductive. Our goal at Waystone is to use universally recognized methods and assessments to diagnose the learning challenge(s) that a client is facing, then provide resources for that person to get better. The way to overcome these challenges – like any challenge in life – is to do the work. So by coming to Waystone you’ll have the means to work hard and ‘apply yourself’ in the right ways, helping you overcome your challenges and become a more productive, successful and contented person.
